Moving to a New Home in Singapore: Step-by-Step Checklist

Relocating within Singapore — whether from an HDB flat to a condominium, between rental units, or into a newly purchased property — requires working through a defined sequence of administrative and logistical steps. Missed notifications and delayed utility applications account for a significant share of complications during otherwise straightforward moves.

Four to Six Weeks Before Moving Day

Notify Both Building Management Offices

The management corporation (MCST) of your current building should be informed of your intended vacate date as early as possible. Most condominiums require a minimum of two to four weeks notice and charge a refundable deposit to reserve the service lift. The destination building will have its own booking procedure for the move-in lift and may restrict moving hours to weekdays or specific Saturday morning slots.

For HDB flats, the town council handles common area bookings rather than an MCST. Lift reservations in HDB blocks are generally less competitive, but confirming the process in advance avoids delays on the day.

Book Your Moving Company

Obtain at least three written quotes from licensed movers. Confirm that the price includes disassembly and reassembly of furniture, protective wrapping, and transport insurance for damaged goods. Verify the company's registration with Singapore's relevant regulatory body and read reviews specific to HDB or high-rise moves, which involve different logistics from landed property relocations.

Weekend slots fill quickly — particularly the first Saturday of each month. If flexibility exists, a midweek move typically proceeds faster, with easier lift access and lighter traffic.

Apply for Utility Activation at the New Address

SP Group manages electricity and piped gas connections in Singapore. Applications can be submitted online up to two weeks before the required activation date. Allow at least three working days for processing. If the property uses a water heater that requires a gas connection, schedule this activation before moving in.

Water supply is handled by PUB and is generally already active when taking possession of a property. Confirm with the landlord or agent in advance. Broadband installations require a separate appointment; fibre connections can take seven to fourteen days to schedule, making this one of the highest-priority items for those working from home.

One to Two Weeks Before

Begin Systematic Packing

Start with items used infrequently: books, off-season clothing, decorative objects. Label each box clearly with its room destination and a brief description of contents. Colour-coded tape per room speeds up unloading. Wrap fragile items in clothing or bubble wrap rather than newspaper, which can transfer ink.

Update Your Address

Singapore residents are required to update their NRIC address within 28 days of moving. The fastest method is via the SingPass portal through MyInfo — a single update propagates to IRAS, CPF Board, HDB, and several other government systems automatically. Private notifications to your employer's HR department, bank, insurance providers, and subscriptions need to be handled separately.

Moving Day

Final Walk-Through of the Old Home

Before the movers arrive, photograph every room, wall surface, floor, ceiling fixture, and built-in appliance. For rental properties, this record is essential if a dispute over the security deposit arises after vacating. Check all storage spaces — under beds, above wardrobes, balcony cupboards.

Supervising the Move

Be present throughout loading. Direct movers on items that are fragile, high-value, or require special handling. Keep essential documents — identification, tenancy agreement, utility account details, medication — in a bag that travels with you rather than on the truck.

Disconnecting Utilities at the Old Address

Submit a final meter reading via the SP Group app and request account termination. Settle any outstanding balance. Retain the final bill for at least three months in case of queries from the building management or the incoming tenant.

After Moving In

Inspect the New Home Before Unloading

Conduct a thorough inspection of the new property before a single box is brought in. Photograph all surfaces, fixtures, and appliances. Note any defects in writing and share with the landlord or agent within 24 hours of taking possession.

Register Your Address with ICA

Address registration is a legal requirement in Singapore. The update is made through the ICA portal or at a service centre. The deadline is 28 days from the date of occupancy. Failure to comply is a criminal offence under the National Registration Act.

First Night Priorities

Set up the bedroom and bathroom before addressing any other room. Identify the nearest supermarket, clinic, and MRT station. If you have children or pets, ensure their immediate needs — food, bedding, familiar objects — are unpacked first to reduce disorientation.
